Hi, I'm Dr. Meghan Tierney.

I'm a board-certified family physician, a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, and a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner. I've practiced primary care for more than a decade, including clinical leadership within a large healthcare system.

But credentials only tell you part of the story. You also want to know: will she listen? Will she take me seriously? Will I feel comfortable telling her what's really going on? For me, those questions are at the heart of good primary care.

My path to medicine

Medicine wasn't my original plan. I studied theater at NYU and earned a BFA in Drama. I ran a theater company, performing Shakespeare in school courtyards and NYC parks. I believe art can change the world, but I felt a calling to have a more concrete impact on those around me.

While I contemplated my next steps, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. I became her primary caregiver and went with her through appointments, chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Sitting beside her, I saw what an honor it was to help someone through one of the hardest periods of her life. I began to think, I could do this. I could be good at this.

While I cared for my mother, I was having my own health struggles. I'd been suffering with daily chronic pain since I was a teen, and it was getting worse. For years, it was blamed on anxiety and the size of my body. Soon after my mom's recovery, it was my turn. A doctor finally listened to me, and gave me the correct diagnosis, which ultimately led to treatment and resolution of my pain. I went from regularly needing a cane to being able to hike five miles.

These experiences shaped my practice. I learned first hand how powerful medicine can be when it's thoughtful and compassionate, and how damaging it can be when a patient isn't heard.

Why Sorrel is personal

In my own life, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and perimenopause arrived almost back-to-back. My body kept changing while everything else kept moving: work, young children, caregiving, marriage, and the endless logistics of family life. There was no quiet pause to adjust to one stage before the next began.

That experience deepened my understanding of how demanding it can be to live in a female body. Our health changes across life stages, but we're often expected to absorb those changes while continuing to take care of everyone and everything around us.

Sometimes caring for your own body can feel like one more job. I want my patients to have a place where they feel cared for instead.

You are the expert on what it feels like to live in your body. I bring the medical expertise. We use both.

What it's like to be my patient

More than your symptoms

I want to know what's happening in your life, what matters to you, and what kind of plan you could realistically follow.

What we know, and what we don't

I'll tell you where there's more than one reasonable choice. I'm comfortable questioning my assumptions, changing course, and sitting with uncertainty when medicine doesn't offer a neat answer.

Firmly on your side

Most of all, I want you to feel that your doctor knows you and cares what happens to you.

A little more about me

I've lived in Seattle for almost 20 years and now live in South Seattle with my husband and our two children.

I read two or three books most months and belong to a book club of local moms. I also love gardening, knitting, baking, traveling, board games, puzzles, and a genuinely good television show. A quiet evening at home is one of my favorite things, when I can manage to get one.
